Train driver sacked over brake tamper claim

A retired Fairfax journalist who claimed he experienced severe brake vibration while driving on the Sunshine Coast says he was sacked from his work in July 2011 after making a report of it to the car industry regulator.

David Farrar, 68, a veteran car industry reporter, says he was sacked from his job at the end of July.

He was working at the Australian Motor Industry Association's Sunshine Coast branch when he received a call from a staffer to discuss the matter.

"It was about a month into the work day and he said: 'I need to tell you something'," Mr Farrar said.

"I said: 'I'm not sure you understand what's going on in this office, it's a national network of the automotive industry, not an industrial network.'

"The staffer went on to say: 'Oh yeah, we've got this [bizarre] phenomenon and you're involved with it'.

"I went, 'Oh yeah, I do' and they told me they were taking the complaint in a matter-of-fact way to the board of the industry."

The company says brake pedal wobbles were the result of "normal wear" due to frequent changes to the transmission fluid, lubricant and other components and that its repair team worked on the issue to resolve it as quickly as possible.

"All our repairs on all our cars for cars like that, they don't involve you having to change the brake pedal," a representative from the Australian Motor Industry Association (AMA) told ABC Radio program Liveline.

"As this is a national network, it would be a lot harder to change the pedal that's there."

The claim had been denied by the AMA's director of customer services, who said brake pedal vibration is a "normal part of the manufacturing process".

The union has demanded an investigation into the circumstances that led to Mr Farrar being sacked.

Crime stats reveal family violence trends through 2015 for Washington, D.C.

According to the latest data, the District had 1,737 homicides in 2015 — the most since the city began counting in 2010. That year, there were 1,517.

The murder rate in the District had fallen a quarter since 2010, when it stood at 2.2 per 100,000 residents.

With crime so low, the average life span of an average man in the District is 74.3 years.

The rate of murder in Washington rose to 2,158.8 per 100,000 people in 2016, an increase of 19 percent from the previous year. At the same time, the homicide rate dropped by 8 percent from the previous year.

The Washington police murder rate peaked in 2015, but had fallen to its lowest level since 2000. That's when the last police report for the city was collected, according to figures released this month from the U.S. Department of Justice. The homicide rate fell by nearly one-third since 2014, when it was almost four times as high as the current rate.

The homicide rate is down 10 percent since 2014, but the crime rate is up almost 20 percent over that time.

When crimes are included, violent crime is down a fraction of a percent. In 2015, Washington police reported 1,832 crimes of violence, down only about 4 percent from 2014, when there were 1,942 crimes of violence.

The number of rape cases dropped 18 percent since 2014, after the last police report for the city was obtained in 2014. It was the lowest such drop since 1998, the most recent year for which figures are available.

Fatal shootings in the District remained at an almost unchanged 6.6 per 100,000 residents. But violent crime in the city also rose 13 percent to 2,079. But the figure for shooting victims in 2015, a decrease of just three percent, was the lowest in eight years.

The annual numbers of violent crimes were down 1 percent from 2015, to 1,815, but the number of property crimes were up 14 percent to 815, the Washington Post reported.

The number of murders in the District were up 24 percent from 2014, to 3,965, and the number of aggravated assault homicides was up by 13 percent to 39. The District was also home to some 1,856 aggravated assaults per 100,000 people, almost the same as 2014.
